JOB: Senior Researcher, Nokia Research Palo Alto, CA

Senior Researcher
Nokia Research Center Palo Alto
(San Francisco Bay Area, CA)
The Personalized Relevancy, Ranking and Recommendation (PR3) team at Nokia Research Center in Palo Alto, CA is looking for a highly qualified researcher to take a leading role in inventing the next-generation of personalized search, behavioral modeling, and location-based services.  This is a rare opportunity to combine research in data mining, pattern matching, and recommendations with real-world, large-scale analytics on massive datasets
Us:
The PR3 team is a small, tightly knit group with expertise in databases, machine learning, scalable systems, ubiquitous computing, and UI/UX design.  While we focus on pushing out advanced, high-impact prototypes, we also publish and patent our work.  We’re both fun and dedicated, we love what we do, and we advance the state-of-the-art every day.
Our Data:

1.       Nokia services: user activity logs from Nokia’s web and mapping services used by millions around the globe.

2.       Navteq: Owned by Nokia, the world’s leading dataset on maps, traffic, location, and LiDAR spatial data. Provides data to Nokia, Yahoo, and Bing as well as 88% of smartphones. Includes tens of millions of points-of-interest with rich metadata, from 83 countries on 6 continents.

3.       Simple Context: PR3’s end-to-end system for collection, storage, retrieval, and sharing of mobile, social, spatio-temporal, and sensor data.  Simple Context has been used by research groups around the world to collect millions of hours of mobile context and sensor data.
You:
We need a passionate, deep thinker who aims beyond the next product cycle but also has the drive and skills to deliver real-world prototypes. As a researcher your objectives may change with new discoveries, but will likely include the following:
·         Design and implement scalable algorithms for analysis and mining of context
·         Develop rich user profiles that enhance personalized search and recommendation
·         Propose and evaluate techniques that improve local search and recommendations
·         Develop unsupervised techniques that discover anomalous features in our maps, POI, and context data (i.e., difficult-to-define neighborhoods, trending neighborhoods for a social network)
·         Contribute back to Nokia services and data sets that are used by millions around the world

Desired Skills & Experience

·         MS or PhD in CS / Machine Learning or Statistics with extensive CS experience
·         5+ years research or industrial experience with analysis of large datasets
·         Core strength in design, implementation, and evaluation of scalable algorithms
·         Demonstrated experience in predictive analytics as well as (ideally) behavior modeling, search, pattern matching, and recommender systems.
