Director of Digital Technology
About the Position:
New York Public Radio’s Digital Media team seeks a lead developer with proven skills as a team
leader and a passion for public media, cool technology, and a mission to engage our audience in
a “conversation” across new and emerging platforms. This person will be the senior developer for
NYPR’s portfolio of products and applications and websites – including wnyc.org and wqxr.org –
as well as the systems architect and manager of a team of front- and back-end developers.
Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
•
Lead our team in planning and developing a scalable and robust open-source systems
architecture for NYPR’s sites and products; turn non-technical requirements into tools that
solve problems; and make technical and strategic recommendations to senior management
•
Work with NYPR digital operations team and content leaders to design solutions for
publishing a wide range of news and cultural programming, building communities, and
capturing audience data
•
Oversee all development workflow, assign tasks and priorities to a team of up to five front-
and back-end developers, review work and ensure a healthy and efficient development
process
•
Lead the continued development and maintenance of NYPR’s content management system
and associated applications, including mobile apps
•
Using Agile and similar development methodologies, take leadership role in maximizing
operational flexibility and team productivity
•
Mentor developers on development, design and architecture best practices
•
Develop and maintain technical documentation on applications, processes and workflow
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree required
• Requires minimum of five years professional experience in software development, preferably
as a lead developer and manager
• Proficiency in such tools as Javascript, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Linux, bash, Python, Django
• Familiarity with version control systems like bazaar, hg, or git
• A strong ability to teach oneself new skills with minimal hand-holding
• Prior experience managing developers required
• Knowledge of Web 2.0 technologies including AJAX, social networking, DHTML, mobile and
emerging digital interfaces
• Requires ability to manage successfully multiple priorities and to navigate demands of
associates with competing needs
• Exceptional communication skills—both oral and written—with an impressive reputation
for building and maintaining relationships with people at all levels of an organization, across a
diverse range of cultural, generational, ethnic, racial, educational and social backgrounds
• Requires the intellectual and emotional depth, maturity, self-confidence and interpersonal
skills to work effectively and/or interact with the other digital staff, executives at NYPR, colleagues
and vendors as needed
