Studio Teaching Apprenticeship Program
June 2013-April 2014
MoMA’s Studio Teaching Apprenticeship Program provides emerging museum and arts educators with a paid opportunity to gain hands-on teaching experience and mentorship with veteran teaching artists and museum education staff. Teaching Apprentices work as assistants within MoMA’s teen art program, In the Making. In the Making provides free six- and ten-week art courses for NYC teens that explore modern and contemporary art through an investigation of various art-making techniques. Teens have the opportunity to discuss artworks in MoMA’s collection, meet practicing artists and curators, visit NYC cultural organizations, collaborate with other NYC teens on studio activities, and create self-directed works of art. Emphasis is placed on experimentation, discussion, and engagement with social issues relevant to youth participants.
Responsibilities:
– Assist the Lead Educator with teaching and management of one six-week summer class, one ten-week fall class, and one ten-week spring class.
o Summer In the Making classes meet from either 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. or 2:00-5:00 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from July 5th through August 12th
o During the fall season, no teen classes are held, but Teaching Apprentices meet once a week (for 10 sessions, November – December) with a MoMA Teaching Artist to learn strategies of contemporary museum education, with a focus on in-gallery teaching and multi-lesson syllabus development.
o Spring In#the#Making classes meet from 4:00-6:30 p.m. on either Tuesday or Thursdays from early February through mid-May (10 sessions).
– Duties may include setting up projects, working closely with students on various studio projects, documenting the class, assisting with the final exhibit, facilitating group discussions connected to MoMA’s Collections, assisting with some curriculum development, maintaining supply lists and cleanup, working closely with Museum educators, and participating in field trips.
– Attend educator training sessions with MoMA Education staff
o Summer: short training in late June, dates TBD
o Spring: one-day training plus bi-weekly reflection meetings
– Additional responsibilities, based upon the interests and previous experience of the Teaching Apprentices, may include the following:
o Creating short videos documenting student work
o Contributing to social networking strategies
o T-shirt design and printing
o Conducting primary research about the benefits of teen art programs
Additional Benefits: In addition to actual teaching responsibilities, Teaching Apprentices are offered supplemental training opportunities throughout the year to introduce museum education strategies. These may include the following:
– Opportunity to assist with other MoMA Education programs, including Community and Access Programs, Family Programs, and Public Programs. Possible opportunity to serve as a Teaching Assistant for one of MoMA’s Adult Courses.
– Opportunity to learn about museum/youth program administration.
– Visits with other museum education departments across New York City.
– Special curatorial tours of MoMA exhibitions.
Eligibility: Ideal candidates should hold a B.A. of B.F.A. in Art, Art Education, Museum Education or a related field. Applicants should have an interest in Museum Education and/or studio art education with a strong desire to work with teen audiences. Applicants should have a commitment to developing a career in the arts and have a demonstrated artistic practice. Current MFA students preferred.
A stipend of 6500 will be provided. (6 bi-monthly installments of $1083)
