Concept Abstract:
My family is in the process of building a house. It’s all very cool, until you find yourself flipping through thousands of pictures of pendant lamps trying to find one that is both cool and affordable. The cool/affordable nexus is incredibly small, and when applied to kids rooms in particular it is almost nonexistent.
I’d like to make a lighting system that is so funky cool that you’ll want to hang it in your own room.
What makes it different is the quick swap in/swap out modular pendant fixtures. Think wall decals the apex of semipermanent design for hanging bulbs. First step will be to design a contraption that would attach to existing pendant cords and from which would hang the various different pendant fixtures; perhaps as simple as a souped-up cord lock. The cord-gizmo would move up and down the pendant cord to accommodate various attachment shapes animals, planets, etc.
The end result is to have a lighting system that can be easily swapped out to adjust to changing tastes, to transform the mood of a room, or to delight and entertain.
The materials involved should be heat resistant, slightly flexible, light, and colourful.
What I need:
I’m looking for someone with a strong design aesthetic and desire to make relatively simple things (souped-up cord locks!) into beautifully designed objects. The candidate will also take my shape ideas and put them in 3d. As my artistic skills begin and end with stick people, I would rely on my exceptional charades skills to explain specifics design concepts.
Final deliverables:
- CAD drawings of the pendant cord attachment/cord lock mechanism
- Materials research
- CAD drawings of three pendant fixtures so that a prototypes can be made and tested
Remuneration:
$3000
Attachments (for inspiration):
1. Cord lock
It’s got the ‘grip to cords’ function down, but it’s missing ‘attach to installed pendant light cord’, ‘house a pendant lamp attachment mechanism’, and ‘not look terrible’ features.
2. One of the only neat/original lights I found during my search.
What I like: beautiful shape, interesting idea to have it hugging the bulb. Problem: you’d be staring directly at a bulb, changing it would likely shatter the bulb, and don’t look at the price.
3. Ideas for pendant fixtures:
