Part-Time Web Assistant

NYU Student Position Announcement: Part Time Web Assistant, Africa House/CTED/DRI

The Web Assistant will support NYU Africa House (AH), the Center for Technology and Economic Development (CTED) and the Development Research Institute (DRI) with website management. The Web Assistant will report to the Africa House/DRI/CTED Director of Operations. The Web Assistant should be experienced working with WordPress technology – including PHP code customizing, HTML as well as plugin management.  The Web Assistant is also responsible for publishing new events, sending blast emails through Mailchimp and the maintenance of subscribers-lists.  The Web Assistant should be comfortable with developing new WordPress websites for special events and conferences.

Job duties will include monitoring of the Africa House/CTED/Yaw Nyarko/NYU African Economic Forum websites and their presence on social media platforms, formatting and editing pictures and video for the websites, and conducting academic literature or media searches on development-related topics. The candidate should also be willing to pitch in and help during scheduled events, and provide basic administrative support on occasion.

This position requires a mature self-starter with a high degree of initiative, the ability to work with minimal supervision, strict attention to detail, dependability, confidentiality, excellent people skills, and good organizational skills.

This position is an hourly position, working up to 20 hours/week.

Other Requirements:

  • Strong English written communication skills.
  • Strong online research skills.
  • Proficiency in html, web design software, WordPress platforms and/or other online content management systems.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, or Adobe Illustrator or other graphics software is a plus.
  • Demonstrated interest in international development, economics, and/or African studies is a plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Updating critical security patches for all of our websites.
  • Updating specific plugins for, slideshows, spam and social networks and evaluating new ones.
  • Working with GoDaddy and Mediatemple.net – transition domain names as required.
  • Maintaining a hosting platform – install new websites.
  • Search for new templates for our websites to keep them up to date with current web-trends.
  • Uploading pictures from past events to the media folder after renaming them and shrinking their dimensions.
  • Making sure the database is backed-up.
  • Coding in PHP, CSS, and HTML to customize the website for our specific needs.
  • Integrating the websites with Mailchimp, creating custom Mailchimp templates for CTED, DRI and AH communications.
  • Maintaining subscriber lists and post-email reporting analysis.
  • Integrating the sites with Google analytics and track popular pages in our websites.
  • Integrating our websites with social networks such Facebook and twitter.
  • Regular monitoring spam across sites.
  • Make sure that all websites content such as blogs and events are identical and coherent.
  • Bringing form and content together by designing a clean layout, logos and other graphic design using adobe suite Illustrator and Photoshop.
  • Increase SEO (Search Engine Optimization) of all our website when new content is posted.
  • Make sure that all subscribers/editors/admins have access to the metadata and have the right restrictions.
  • Spot check that all pages display correctly and that all links/documents are accounted for.
  • Provide support and guidance to people who are updating the website content.
