Senior Lecturer/Lecturer: History and Theory of Art and Design

The Faculty seeks to appoint a Senior Lecturer or Lecturer who will be responsible primarily for teaching and co-ordinating the cross-disciplinary, undergraduate theory course in the Faculty, while contributing actively to the Faculty’s research output, and undertaking supervision of postgraduate students. Candidates with a proven research record and expertise in teaching related to visual culture and theory, broadly defined, are invited to apply.

Job Specification…

The incumbent will be expected to:  

·         Teach and assess history and theory of design at undergraduate level.
·         Contribute actively to research in his/her specialist field related to art and/or design history and theory.
·         Publish research using appropriate channels, including peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
·         Coordinate and develop curriculum material for the relevant modules across the Faculty.
·         Share in the administration and management of the Department and relevant courses.
·         Participate in official meetings of the Department and Faculty.
·         Participate in University-linked community development projects and/or have an active presence as a public intellectual, where appropriate.
·         Supervise postgraduate students.

Minimum Requirements…

Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Art History, Design History, Cultural Studies, Visual Art) is required at both levels.  To be considered for Senior Lecturer, a doctoral qualification or substantial progress towards the completion of such a qualification is necessary.

·         An in-depth and current knowledge of art and design history and theory.
·         Experience as a researcher with evidence of published output in peer-reviewed journals and/or collaborations in peer-reviewed, funded projects.
·         A record of collegiality, collaboration and a comprehensive understanding of research methodologies.
·         At least three years’ teaching experience at tertiary level.

Competencies:

·         Excellent communication skills in academic English.
·         A specialist knowledge of art and design research.
·         Proven planning and administration skills.
·         Ability to monitor and coach student performance and provide critical feedback in an objective and professional manner.
·         Ability to facilitate the teaching of art and design theory over a broad spectrum of theories and methodologies.
·         Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with people from a wide range of disciplines and to work effectively in a
multicultural environment.
·         Proven teaching ability and competence, including supervision of postgraduate students.

Recommendations

·         An NRF rating.
·         A strong understanding and practice of contemporary and emerging design methodologies and practices.
·         Familiarity with both evidence-based and practice-led research principles and methodologies.
