Betaworks is a technology studio in New York City, building new products, growing companies and seed investing. Tweetdeck, bitly, SocialFlow and Chartbeat launched out of betaworks over the past couple of years. We’re currently incubating 11 different small to medium-sized startups. As a data science intern at betaworks, you will get to work the betaworks studio companies on a multitude of problems and datasets. From the media side, with digg and Instapaper, to Giphy, our animated GIF search engine, to poncho, a personalized weather app, and other early stage incubations. As one can imagine, data at betaworks is incredibly varied, ranging from social data, to multimedia, information consumption and weather prediction data streams. Building Products – we use a wide array of methods, ranging from topic modeling, natural language processing, time series analysis, prediction, classification, and data visualization as a way to build novel features into existing betaworks products, as well as experiment with new product ideas. We use various python libraries, and utilize data stores such as redis, hypertable, HBase and Hadoop, amongst others.
  2. Research / Storytelling – we love telling stories based on our data. We collaborate with the digg editors on original content as well as publish in-depth analyses on the betaworks data blog  We’re committed to publishing both on our blog and in academic journals. It is our priority to get your summer work published.
