Web Intern, Doctors Without Borders

Type of position: Intern, paid ($10/hour)
Time Commitment: 20 hrs/week
Duration: 3 months (approx May 27 to August 29, 2014)
Location: New York City

Objective: To support the Web & Publications Team while providing a comprehensive learning experience to an individual interested in design, web, and multimedia.

Overview: The Web Intern will work closely with the Web Manager, developers, and communications staff, offering day-to-day support and meeting project-based needs as they arise. The Web Intern will have the opportunity to contribute creatively to a constantly evolving, highly-visited humanitarian website while improving his/her design, development, and content management skills. An individual looking to put a Web Design or Development degree to work for a good cause and to learn more about the Web will be perfectly suited for this position. The selected candidate must be willing to commit to this internship for the duration of the semester.

Duties: The Web Intern will be expected to perform the following tasks:

  • Learn or improve understanding of the Drupal CMS, including contributing to content organization and management, site building, and maintenance
  • Post content to Website regularly and assist with daily tasks
  • Monitor and produce Web metrics
  • Participate in discussions regarding site development and growth
  • Create and optimize content for MSF’s social media accounts
  • Design Web page layouts and Web graphics or contribute to Web page development
  • Edit multimedia files, including slideshows, audio and video

Required Skills:

  • Good understanding of HTML to create Web pages
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to troubleshoot one’s own work
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage own time
  • Comfortable working on both PC and Mac platforms

Preferred Skills:

  • Previous use and understanding of a Content Management System (CMS) such as WordPress or Drupal
  • Design skills; experience using Photoshop/ACS for graphic design
  • Development knowledge or skills (familiarity with CSS, PHP, and Javascript)
  • Knowledge of video editing programs
