Print and Digital Magazine Production Associate

Entry-level, full-time, long-term freelance, with potential to transition to staff

Monday through Friday, evening shift (5 P.M. to midnight), plus at-home weekend hours with compensatory days provided

Report to: Director of Editorial Production, Head of Digital Content Production, Nightshift Manager

 

The New Yorker is seeking a full-time, entry-level to moderately experienced content production associate, with considerable technology skills, for the evening shift of our growing and cutting-edge editorial production department. The position is long-term freelance, in-house at our Times Square location, and is available immediately.

Job Summary:

This position is focused on production of the print and digital editions of the magazine, which involves interfacing with various departments to track and close the issue each week. Weekend work includes communicating with remote production team and assuring quality control of New Yorker app content.

The role is part of a position-tracked department where there are opportunities to advance. Interest in long-term commitment, and amenability to ebbs and flows of changing responsibilities over time is a must. Interest and aptitude related to mobile app development, production, and quality control will be considered highly. Additional interest in scripting and automation, application and product development, technology market research and/or database management is a plus.

The role is not a track for writing or editing positions, though appreciation or interest in those areas is most welcome.

 

Qualifications:

  • College degree

  • Familiarity with InDesign, K4, Photoshop, Illustrator, HTML & CSS

  • Comfortable with a variety of desktop and mobile operating systems: Apple, Android, Windows, etc; ability to thoroughly research and troubleshoot problems within these systems

  • Ability to sustain a high level of care and meticulous attention to detail in a fast-paced environment

  • Exceptional capacity to learn and solve problems

  • Ability to self-motivate, meet deadlines and take initiative to complete tasks both within and outside the scope of duties

  • Capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously and maintain flexibility with shifting responsibilities

  • Solid oral and written communication skills, including ability to give and receive honest and direct feedback

  • Calm demeanor and positive attitude under pressure

  • Willingness to be part of a close-knit team and thrive in a collaborative environment

 

Preferred, but not required:

  • Strong knowledge of copy-editing marks and editorial procedures

  • Experience with and knowledge of social media conventions and best practices

  • Familiarity with WordPress, FilemakerPro, Javascript, Applescript, Python and/or Github

 

Responsibilities will include:

  • Creating layouts in InDesign while following strict style sheet protocol

  • Managing the design process for assigned layouts from initial stages through final shipping

  • Sending author proofs and working with editor, proofreader, and fact-checking personnel to finalize articles

  • Preparing HTML & CSS files for website and tablet and mobile devices
