SUMMARY
Queens University of Charlotte invites applications for its endowed Knight-Crane Professor of Communication (open rank) specializing in Civic Media, with a focus on emerging media and culture. This is a full-time, nine month tenure track position beginning August 2015 reporting to the Dean of the James L. Knight School of Communication. The Knight School at Queens operates with an endowment from the Knight Foundation, and shares the Foundation’s investment in creating informed and engaged communities. The School’s undergraduate and graduate programs offer students a critical lens on how digital technologies are transforming society and culture, producing new forms of interaction, and modeling new information ecosystems.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
The endowed professorship will provide leadership in the Knight School’s strategic initiatives, and have research and teaching interests aligned with the School’s particular focus on bridging community engagement, digital literacy, and new media innovation. Ideal candidates will have critical expertise in digital technologies and emerging media-based community forms, a demonstrated capacity for research in their areas, teaching experience, a willingness to help build curriculum, and an investment in community engagement. The endowed chair will be encouraged to further the School’s innovative research program, and develop collaborative grant supported projects.
A PhD in communication, media, culture, technology studies or a related field is required. A background in such areas as digital citizenship, news and information literacy, media analysis, and/or data-driven storytelling is highly desirable. Applicants must possess a high degree of critical competency to participate in partnerships with a broad range of media industries and civic agencies, have a well-defined research agenda, and a demonstrated publication record. Prior teaching experience and a commitment to teaching excellence are required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Teaching undergraduate and graduate classes in digital media studies
• Research/creative work is required for tenure
• Service to the school, university and community
