I wanted to let you know that The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), part of the National Institutes of Health, is issuing a $300,000 challenge to create a wearable alcohol biosensor. The winner of this challenge will design a discreet wearable prototype that provides real-time blood alcohol monitoring. NIAAA would like to offer the opportunity to help promote this challenge to NYU students.
Biosensors can be jewelry or clothing, but NIAAA welcomes and encourages out-of-the box creativity. The device must be able to:
- Measure blood alcohol level
- Interpret the data
- Store or transmit data wirelessly to a smartphone or other device
Entries must be working prototypes.
Timeline:
- December 1, 2015: Submission deadline
- January 2016: Judging expected to begin
- February 15, 2016: Winners announced on or after this date.
Prizes:
The first prize winner will receive $200,000 and the second prize will receive $100,000.
