Data Visualization Designer Job Description
Wearable Technology& Visualization start-up is an innovation think and do tank located in New York City. They are looking for an organized, efficient and highly detailed data visualization and info-graphic designer to mine data and produce insights to complex problems visually.
This person will lead a design-driven process to create the visualizations and analytic capabilities. Visual style in the mode of Ben Fry at Fathom in both 3D and 2D.
Data Visualizations will be used for internal use and external outreach. Internal needs include visualization of the structure of our organization as a whole, analytics/visualization of new-business insights and opportunities, geo-mapping, data infomatics, as well as a tool to visualize the real-time status of each department for the CEO. External applications include presentation of our organization as well as the capabilities of our AI-enhanced wearable tech devices and data-driven products to potential clients, partners and investors.
Output of visualizations will include print, static digital presentations, interactive touch-screen and immersive 3D environments such as Oculus Riff, Hololens and Magic Leap.
The role will encompass the research activities necessary to form an understanding of data-driven prototypes. Succeeding in this role will require an ability to understand and communicate the complex relationships between markets, governments, businesses, and people hidden in huge datasets. Responsibilities also include defining a common set of visualization patterns and languages that align with brand codes.
The Data Visualization Designer will work with an interdisciplinary team of designers to implement and deploy data visualization tools and should be prepared to pitch concepts.
Requirements:
– Minimum 3-5 years of industry experience with a focus on interactive data visualization, information visualization, information graphics, or related fields.
– Ability to rapidly iterate through conceptual ideas or designs and effectively communicate these using low to medium-fidelity prototypes, such as sketches, paper prototypes, wireframes, storyboards, interactive click-throughs etc.
– Strategic project leadership: experience leading projects through concept, pitch, iterative design and development, delivery, and ongoing support
– Prior experience working in an interdisciplinary team of developers, designers, and/or subject-matter experts.
Ability to communicate with and present to stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
Undergraduate/Graduate Degree or equivalent experience in any of the following fields: Information Design, Interaction Design, Graphic design, User Experience, Human-Computer Interaction, Statistics, Data science and Analytics. Fine art background a plus.
Strong talent for all elements of design, color, layout and typography

Ability to meet deadlines on a daily basis and multi task in a very fast paced environment
Have a love of detail oriented and brand-coded system work
Strong time management, communication, and interpersonal skills
Able to work independently with minimal instruction
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to keep abreast of innovative design, color and art.

Must be meticulous and have a flexible nature and be able to work on own initiative and take responsibility.
Desirable Skills and Experience:
– Familiarity with visual analysis software e.g. Tableau Spotfire, Qlik, VisIt.
– Familiarity with high-fidelity visualization prototyping tools such as d3.js, Processing, three.js, ggplot2/R, Python or similar.
– Graphic design background or experience.
– Experience designing for desktop & mobile and 2D & 3D data visualizations.
