POSITION: Lead Instructor, After School Program
DEPARTMENT: Girl Leadership Programs
REPORTS TO: After School Program Manager
DURATION: October 2016 – May 2017
STATUS/SALARY: Part-Time
POSITION OBJECTIVES:
The Girl Scouts of Greater New York (GSGNY) is seeking committed, enthusiastic instructors to teach in a new after
school coding program, using an age-appropriate curriculum that taps the interest of middle school girls. Our
program offers an engaging, accessible learning environment; inspiring active learning and building confidence in
STEM; and exposing girls to careers and women role models within the STEM sector.
The program will be based in schools or other community buildings throughout New York City. This per diem position
leads instruction alongside an assistant instructor, co-teaching weekly 2-hour sessions for 20 sessions during the
academic year, beginning fall of 2016.
Coding experience is not required, as both instructors will be trained on the curriculum that combines coding, digital
storytelling, and Girl Scouts-style leadership development and complement each other’s skillset. We are looking for
instructors who can demonstrate professionalism and consistency, while also relating to, coaching, and inspiring girls
as they embrace and undertake building STEM and other new skills. Applicants fluent in Spanish are encouraged to
apply.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
 Lead the delivery of an after school coding curriculum that combines online and offline elements. Training,
curriculum, and materials will be provided by GSGNY After School Program Manager, department staff, and
program development partners.
 Work in tandem with Assistant Instructor on-site to deliver quality coding curriculum to underserved schools and
after school programs across New York City.
 Adapt teaching to a wide variety of informal environments.
 Lead field trips, coordinate guest speakers, and oversee events as scheduled per site.
 Support girl recruitment, parent, and community engagement specific to each site, and provide quality customer
service to parents and site/school administration.
 Ensure that accurate attendance is taken every day, while monitoring frequent absences.
 Assume responsibility for and follow protocol to watch students until pickup by designated parent/caregiver
and/or school staff.
 Support the completion of evaluation and assessment procedures, including but not limited to accurate and
timely tracking of program and student data and providing reports as necessary to the Afterschool Program
Manager.
 Be a positive role model and promote high morale in program participants.

QUALIFICATIONS:
 Bachelor’s degree in education, social work or relevant field. Master’s degree (or in progress) preferred.
 Successful classroom or after-school teaching experience with strong classroom management skills.
 Spanish language fluency preferred, but not required.
 Experience teaching or working with underserved urban youth strongly preferred.
 Enthusiasm for empowering girls and underserved youth to learn new skills.
 Strong comfort level with technology required; coding experience welcome.
 Familiarity with and high level of comfort in travelling throughout the five boroughs.
 Availability to be on-site during after school program hours; approximately 3:00pm-6:00pm, Monday-Friday.
Schedules to be determined within program hours and based on site needs.
 Available for training between August – September 2016 and regular check-ins (in-person and via email) with
After School Program Manager throughout program year.
 Strong interpersonal skills to ensure effective interactions with individuals of all levels and backgrounds.
 Must be able to complete required background check.

 Current/recently graduated graduate students, with knowledge of computer programming. Strong
undergraduate candidates may be considered.
 Experience using programming tools (i.e. code.org, Scratch, JavaScript)
 Enthusiasm for getting girls and underserved youth interested in technology.
 Experience or interest in teaching is highly preferred.
 Familiarity with and high level of comfort in travelling throughout the five boroughs.
