OVERVIEW:

 

The position serves as the Director of Digital and Emerging Media for the museum. The position reports directly to the Director of the Museum and works closely with the Senior Management Team, CHSDM Board of Trustees, and supervises a team of information, digital  and media technology specialists.  Serves as part of the senior management team within the museum. Provides strategic vision and operational support.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

As Director of Digital and Emerging Medial will lead and maintain the creative and long term strategic development of the Museum’s website (www.cooperhewitt.org); and enhance the digital transformation that introduced interactive technology (such as the “Pen”) to the galleries. Responsible for all aspects of the museum digital technology from engineering to design, production and  development of all digital content. Responsible for overseeing the digital and emerging media team and information technology enterprise systems and desktop support.

Oversees Information Technology Enterprise Systems and Desktop Support: Oversees the IT and Tessitura specialists responsible for Enterprise Application Management, IT Customer Service & Support, and ensures that General Network Management and Security meet customer services requirements for the museum in areas of customer support. Establishes metrics and analysis systems to ensure actions are timely and reviewed at critical points. Plans, organizes, and directs the activities of the IT technology  programs ensuring customer needs are met and that all IT requirements are met as required by Smithsonian’s Office of Information Technology.

Oversees and Develops Interactive Media/Web and Data Analytics:  Generates  usable and useful web and media concepts, including the design, prototyping and development of interactive technology, standards, and scripting and programming languages. Manages, administers, and supervises staff in a distributed computing environment involving multiple facilities and varying disciplinary requirements. Independently redesigns, prototype and oversees interactive websites, including visual design and branding across multiple platforms. Oversees the develop of website metrics and social media strategies and initiatives. Formulates, analyzes, and presents highly technical project plans, such as recommending software components, media assets and technical approaches for complex and interactive websites. Performs and oversees webmaster duties such as creates and  develops website metrics and social media strategies and initiatives. Works closely with colleagues at OCIO in DC to share strategies and technologies.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervisory/Managerial duties include serving as a first line supervisor for the organization. This includes but is not limited to: assigning work, setting priorities, and reviewing and evaluating work and performance of subordinates; approving leave; coaching and developing employees; recommending corrective or disciplinary actions; assisting in budget planning and projecting short-term needs; managing projects within assigned resources; resolving routine problems that typically impact the objectives of the organizational unit; when required, coordinating with customers outside the immediate organization.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of designing, prototyping and managing interactive websites.

Knowledge of project management to oversee highly technical and innovative systems, projects or resolve critical problems in existing systems which require innovative solutions, etc.

Knowledge in web and media concepts, including the design, prototyping and development of interactive technology, standards, and scripting and programming languages.

Skilled in customer service and support principles and methods sufficient to oversee and manage IT  customer support operations involving the delivery of a full range of customer support services to all serviced organizations.

Ability to oversee network configuration techniques, computer equipment and assigned system software to determine source of failures.

Knowledge of current state-of-the-art system software to include operating systems as well as functional application software.

Ability to manage, administer, and supervise staff in a distributed computing environment involving multiple facilities and varying disciplinary requirements. Ability to dependently redesign, prototype and manage highly complex and interactive websites, including visual design and branding across multiple platforms. Oversees the develop of website metrics and social media strategies and initiatives. Formulate, analyze, and present highly technical project plans, such as recommending software components, media assets and technical approaches for complex and interactive websites.

Skill in formulating, analyzing, and presenting project plans, such as recommending software components, media assets and technical approaches for complex and interactive websites.

Ability to advise senior executives and senior management on new developments and advanced techniques that are original and highly effective  manner especially to non-technical users.

Ability to coordinate development of ADP standards, guidelines, or policy.

Skill in planning, organizing and directing a  team to create viable highly technical solutions  and to negotiate effectively with management to accept and implement recommendation and proposed solutions.

Travel to offsite meetings and attendance at conferences will be required.
