Visiting Assistant Professor in Code + Liberal Arts
Eugene Lang College for Liberal Arts, an undergraduate college of The New School, invites applications for a one-year proportional fixed term position in Code + Liberal Arts. Code + Liberal Arts is a new initiative that seeks to increase opportunities for students to combine practical skills in coding and computational thinking with the critical practices and foci of a traditional liberal arts curriculum. The initiative aims to help students gain a better understanding of the socio-technological landscape and to increase their sense of agency within it while providing a critical framework from which to evaluate technological changes.
To that end, Lang College is looking for a faculty member to develop new courses and events that will be part of the liberal art curriculum and will provide students with meaningful experiences in coding and computational thinking. Previous courses in this area have explored the role of fake news, code in the arts, algorithmic discrimination, and the analysis of big data.
Responsibilities for this position include designing and teaching three courses during the academic year, planning two events open to the college to increase interest and visibility for this initiative, acting as a resource for students interested in code, and working with the Code + Liberal Arts advisory committee. The start date is July 2018. All hiring is subject to the Provost’s budgetary approval.
Candidates must have a terminal degree in a relevant field or significant industry or professional experience and a national reputation in the field. They should have experience teaching, preferably in a liberal arts college. They should also have familiarity with New York City media arts and resources.
