Internship Period: June 1, 2018 – August 18, 2018
SculptureCenter is accepting internship applicants for summer 2018. Working with a
small staff in an open office environment, SculptureCenter interns take on projects that
have a direct and visible outcome in our exhibitions, public programs, and events. They
leave the program with a range of important professional skills for working in the field of
contemporary art and hands on experience working in a non-profit art institution.
About SculptureCenter
SculptureCenter leads the conversation on contemporary art by supporting artistic
innovation and independent thought highlighting sculpture’s specific potential to change
the way we engage with the world. Positioning artists’ work in larger cultural, historical,
and aesthetic contexts, SculptureCenter discerns and interprets emerging ideas. Founded
by artists in 1928, SculptureCenter provides an international forum that connects artists
and audiences by presenting exhibitions, commissioning new work, and generating
scholarship.
Curatorial Internship:
Curatorial interns work directly with the Chief Curator, Curator, and Exhibition and
Program Manager in the organization of SculptureCenter’s exhibitions, programmatic
activities, and public events. Summer interns work most intensively on a major project
focused on emerging artists. Additionally, interns assist with planning and research for
forthcoming exhibitions, participate in exhibition production, help with daily
administrative duties and correspondence, and assist with public program and event
staffing.
Archive Internship:
The Archive Intern will work directly with the Operations Manager to organize and
consolidate physical and digital archival material at SculptureCenter’s offices and storage
facility. The Archive Intern will assist in compiling a preliminary assessment of the
archive’s condition and organization, help draft storage procedures, and research archival
methodologies and best practices. Candidates must be able to work independently and
have a strong interest in archival or museum studies.
Marketing and Communications Internship:
Marketing and Communications interns work directly with the Communications,
Marketing, and Digital Media Manager. Some responsibilities include supporting
campaigns for the season’s exhibitions and events, assisting with the migration and
updating of website content, sourcing content for social media channels, conducting
guided research for marketing and press outreach opportunities, and maintaining the
external listings of our Limited Editions artworks.

Special Events and Development Internship:
The Special Events and Development interns work directly with the Individual Giving and
Events Manager, the Executive Office and Development Associate, and the Director of
Advancement on fundraising initiatives for SculptureCenter patron programs, the
upcoming fall gala, updating the database, prospect research, and individual and
corporate giving as well as membership, sponsorships, and project planning. Special
Events and Development Interns also help coordinate patron gallery tours, collection and
studio visits, and private breakfasts, lunches or dinners. Previous experience in
fundraising and special events preferred.
Professional skills and experience
Academic background in art history, fine art, or a related field preferred. Ideal candidates
will have professional written and oral communication, excellent organization, and online
research skills as well as basic familiarity with creative software, such as Photoshop,
InDesign, and Illustrator. Interns should have a strong knowledge of and enthusiasm for
contemporary art, enjoy visiting galleries and museums in their free time. Prior museum
or gallery experience preferred. Interns provide day-to-day support for museum staff,
including administrative duties and correspondence, and assist with event and program
staffing. Candidates must be willing to learn new skills quickly, have strong
communication and organizational skills.
Hours and compensation
Internships run from June to August 2018 (start and end dates to be determined in
coordination with selected applicants). Weeks and hourly scheduling is flexible with an
expected commitment of two days per week. Internships are unpaid but school credit may
be earned. We regularly host international interns with strong language skills.
