JOB: Joanne Weaver Group, Full-Time, Senior Design Lead

Joanne Weaver Group

Senior Design Lead – 33% global travel (Africa, Asia, USA)

Global, top-ranked design firm’s nonprofit division // social impact space

Fulltime – NYC studio

Globetrotting design leaders who want to do good in the world, elbow to elbow some of the best + brightest colleagues you’ll ever work with – read on!

This is a design opportunity of a lifetime. You’ll regularly travel the world – Africa, Asia, across the USA, and beyond – to make profound, beautiful work in the social impact space, alongside your peers, who are some of the most incredible designers in the world.

Our client is the nonprofit arm at one of the highest-ranked design studios in the world, and they’re seeking a fulltime Senior Design Lead to join their team in their gorgeous, sweeping space in downtown NYC – complete with a meditation room, and big airy spaces to think and dream up solutions to the world’s biggest social challenges.

You can come from any design discipline within digital – Visual UI and Product Design are preferred, but also open to UX if you’ve got that final pixel-perfect polish and a gorgeous book (see below) – in short, you’re a master of your craft. Your book is mostly digital, but maybe you’ve got some print / branding / motion / etc work, too, as a secondary focus.

Your portfolio? It’s *gorgeous*. Breathtaking. Not your average run of the mill book. They described “Monument Valley” as the level of design polish and calibre they’re looking for – so the bar is set very, very high. Your book ideally includes 1-3 case studies and examples of social impact work (preferred), and it must be visually arresting in a pixel-perfect, detail-oriented way.

You are a natural leader who, with little supervision, will lead your project team(s) on projects spanning financial stability for at-risk populations in America, to contraception awareness campaigns in Africa, and so much beyond.

This isn’t a job you do for the money, but rather for the priceless experience and adventure you gain from it, the doors that it opens for you in your career, and your innate desire to help people across the world in a meaningful and incredibly rewarding way.

You’ll work hand in hand with an in-house and remote Dev team, and execute projects from conception through launch. And launch they do! As their global design director said, they don’t measure their work by how many awards it wins, but rather through the amount of social change they’re able to affect in the world. Helping people is what it’s all about.

Open to relocation to NYC for qualified candidates; must be authorized to work in the USA.

Requirements:

  • 8+ years in visual UX, UI, and developing beautiful digital experiences across a variety of mediums.
  • Curiosity, optimism, desire for social change and to dive into deep into some of the toughest challenges of our time.
  • Willing and able and have a desire to travel internationally ~33% of the time.
  • As a design leader your first instinct is to join and build alongside teams, demonstrating excellence through doing.
  • Your portfolio shows a depth of thinking, conceptual skills, and a sensitivity to beautiful design details.
  • You are a natural collaborator and seek to empower and bring out the best in collaborative teams.
  • You love mentoring other designers, and are excited about building others’ skills.
  • You lead teams by making, using your experience to guide more than manage.
  • You are an elegant simplifier.
  • You understand how to turn insights about human behavior and needs into tangible concepts.
  • You are able to balance between tackling complex systemic problems holistically, and diving into the details that matter.
  • You’ve successfully launched digital products, and are comfortable vetting and overseeing development partners through an iterative process of design implementation.
  • You are comfortable taking bold steps and defining a creative vision even if it scares you.
  • Contribute to company’s culture
Like to haves:
  • Experienced leading teams through a rigorous human centered design process
  • You’ve worked/collaborated with a diversity of cultures and are sensitive to the challenges of low-income populations
