TEMP: Google SF, Visual Designer, 6 months

TEMP: Google SF, Visual Designer, 6 months

Project overview:

We’re the Making & Science team at Google. We believe that making things is a great way to explore scientific concepts, and that hands-on projects increase engagement, cultivate curiosity, and spark a lifelong interest in learning. We support education and research through multiple programs and are seeking a Visual Designer to help on product development and branding.

We follow a simple but vital premise in the User Experience group: “Focus on the user and all else will follow.” We’re passionately interested in our users and strive to learn everything we can about their goals and needs, attitudes and emotions to help define the products and experiences we create. The User Experience team is a critical driving force behind gathering these insights and then using them to inspire and inform design. We are a multi-disciplinary team of designers and researchers who collaborate closely with each other and with Engineering and Product Management to create innovative, and usable, products that people love to use.

The role: Visual Designer

Our team is working on efforts to help improve education long term. We are seeking a strong Visual Designer who is a self-starter and (ideally) passionate about the space.

You will have the opportunity to support our UX team in developing an innovative, user-friendly, best-of-breed product. We are looking for an individual with excellent communication skills, diligent, detailed-oriented, and can work fairly independently.

This is a temporary 6-12 months contract, hired through a recruiting agency, and is based in Google’s San Francisco office as you will be partnering closely with other UXers, Product Managers, and Engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Develop branding and visual assets for a variety of projects

  • Develop and apply visual style and consistent interaction patterns

  • Design and iterate on wireframes, mockups, or prototypes

  • Communicate design rationale, and evaluate/address feedback from stakeholders

  • Participate in regular UX standups and critiques, as well as proactively share updates

  • Work with cross-functional team to ensure designs are feasible and solve for requirements

  • Follow through on details of implementation and drive fit-and-finish polish

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree in Design (e.g., interaction, visual communications, HCI, etc)

  • Strong visual design skills, knowledge of the user-centered design methodologies, and a good understanding of usability

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills

  • Experience collaborating with technical and non-technical stakeholders (user researchers, other designers, product managers, engineers)

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience designing and shipping software experiences across multiple contexts (mobile apps, web, emails, notifications)

  • Experience working with complexity and determining constraints in ambiguous situations

  • Experience designing modular templates, frameworks, or design systems

  • Experience designing marketing campaigns that drove product growth and new user acquisition
