[JOB] Front End Engineer

Front End Engineer

As Front End Engineer, you’ll be walking the line between front end web developer and designer. You’ll have the software engineering chops to write clean and well thought-out code, but you’ll also be passionate about usability and design for the web.

You will take the lead role in maintaining and re-imagining the current HTML/CSS and JavaScript code base for our website. You’ll be working closely with our information architect and our designers to turn mock-ups into working HTML/CSS prototypes. The Front-End Developer will also be involved in content updates and general maintenance of the website.

Requirements:

  • Clean and elegant HTML and CSS
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of JavaScript and jQuery
  • Prior experience creating maintainable cross-browser code from lo-fi wire-frames
  • Familiarity with progressive enhancement techniques
  • Experience with server side languages (we’re fond of Python)
  • Experience with version control systems (like Subversion or git)
  • Comfortable working in a *nix environment
  • Aware of contemporary web performance techniques and analysis

*Plusses:

  • Experience with static site-generation tools such as webgen
  • Experience with CSS frameworks (YUI grids, blueprint)
  • Experience with dynamic stylesheets (we use LESS)

More about us:
Freelancers Union is not your typical non-profit, and we look for not-your-typical employees. We think of ourselves as “practical revolutionaries”— people who have extraordinary vision and want to make significant change, but can also put big, lofty ideas into tangible action. We believe strongly in solidarity, both for our staff and for the freelance community.

Independent workers comprise 30% of the U.S. workforce—and growing—but lack many of the basic supports and protections that traditional employees get. We aim to change that for our 155,000 members, and for the 42 million independent workers nationwide. Oh, and we’re also the people behind all those ads with the beehive that you see on the New York City subways. For more information about us and what we do, please visit www.freelancersunion.org.

Our office is in DUMBO, the first stop into Brooklyn on the A, C, or F subway lines.

If you’re interested in joining our team of entrepreneurial pioneers, please apply with your resume and cover letter with salary requirements. Sorry, but we won’t consider resumes that don’t include both a cover letter and salary requirements. Local Candidates Only.

We look forward to hearing from you!

We are looking to fill these two positions asap.  All resumes can either come to resume@freelancersunion.orgor eschultz@freelancersunion.org.

Best,
Ellen Schultz
