ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Interns play a crucial role in the accomplishment of Storefront’s mission, and gain access to Storefront’s staff and network of architects, artists, and designers. Our internship program is based on our programming and needs, and we welcome candidates with the appropriate skills, attitude, and interests.
Interns receive instruction and training from our staff and exposure to a broad range of activities spanning from daily operations and exhibition installations to institutional development, archival research, and project research and development. Applicants from all academic backgrounds are welcome. Interns are expected to work well both independently and in groups, and to possess an interest in cultural production, the arts, architecture, and ideas that drive Storefront’s mission.
While all interns are exposed to the full spectrum of the organization’s operations, Storefront offers an opportunity to focus more specifically on one of the following categories: development/
Internship periods are organized to be in conjunction with university semesters (September–December, January–May, May–August). All applicants must be able to commit to at least two days per week. All interns are expected to help out with shared responsibilities including:
- Monitoring exhibitions during gallery hours
- Engaging and providing information to gallery visitors
- Assisting Storefront staff with both long term projects and daily office or gallery tasks
All applicants should hold the following qualifications:
- Interest in Storefront’s mission
- Desire to gain knowledge of operations in a non-profit organization
- Ability to interact with people in a gallery setting, and work in small office environment
- General computer skills: word processing, data management, digital imaging

NOTE: Internships at Storefront for Art and Architecture are unpaid. Storefront prioritizes hiring students currently enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs; university credit can be arranged.
Storefront’s internship program offers training and direct experience working in what remains one of the only platforms focusing on the intersection of architecture, art, and design. Interns are intimately acquainted with Storefront’s broad community of artists, architects, designers, philanthropists, and administrators. Storefront is also part of the SoHo Arts Network, a community of organizations in and around SoHo that offers interns yet another opportunity to build a network of professional contacts.
OPEN INTERNSHIPS:
GALLERY
The gallery intern will work closely with the Gallery and Operations Manager to conceptualize the translation of curatorial ideas into a physical exhibition within the Storefront for Art and Architecture unique gallery space. They will research and develop exhibition design strategies, and assist with the preparation, installation, and de-installation of exhibitions and events. As gallery interns are also primarily the face of Storefront during exhibitions, it is their role to communicate the current exhibition to visitors and actively engage with the public to inform them of Storefront’s overall mission. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assisting with day-to day gallery operations and administrative tasks for Storefront, the production of exhibition drawings for layouts and related display elements, signage, or the formatting of artwork, as well as assisting in the installation and fabrication of these materials.
Requisites
- Expertise in AutoCAD, Rhino
- Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite, in particular; Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop
- Ability to work under time constraints and flexible schedules
- Detail-oriented and organized
- Able to work and think independently
Preferred
- Building and fabrication skills
- Experience with the use of construction materials and power tools
- Familiarity with sound and video equipment

CURATORIAL
The curatorial intern will work closely with the Curatorial Fellow to assist with curatorial research, helping in the preparation of exhibitions, events, projects, competitions, and publications organized by Storefront for Art and Architecture, including preparation of schedules, exhibition and project texts, archival material, and day-to-day operations in the Curatorial Department. This internship offers valuable experience in a professional arts environment. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Research on future exhibitions, assisting in curatorial and wall texts, preparation of checklists, draft of presentations, planning of events, installation and de-installation of exhibitions and events, gallery attendance, and organization of archival material.
Requisites

- Good researching and writing skills
- Organized and detail-oriented
- Interest in public engagement
Preferred
- Computer skills preferred: Adobe (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) Microsoft Office, scanning software
- Passionate about art and architecture and Storefront’s mission

DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNICATIONS
Development & Communications interns will work closely with the Development & Communications Associate, assisting with a broad range of administrative, public-facing, and development work, helping to develop and prepare exhibition texts, social media posts, special event invitations, and assessments of all public-facing material organized by Storefront for Art and Architecture.
This internship offers valuable experience in a professional arts environment. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: drafting social media posts, new graphic design and design within templates, special event organization, vendor and sponsor outreach, preparation of printed materials for exhibitions and events, and on-site help for development events.
