Position Objectives
* This is a key engineering position that requires the ability to probl=
em solve and communicate clearly in a highly creative and sometimes intense =
working/learning environment. Your primary activity will be to provide suppo=
rt to the Banff New Media Institute=92s Advanced Research Technology (ART) M=
obile Lab in its ongoing research activities. This position reports directly=
to the Director/Executive Producer of BNMI, but receives daily direction fr=
om the Senior Mobile Researcher. You will act as the technical lead for the =
ART Mobile Lab in all areas, including in-house software development project=
s, collaborations with external artists and partners, research of emerging t=
echnologies and platforms, usability research, technical evaluation, proposa=
l writing and dissemination. In particular, you will be responsible for deve=
loping software applications for a variety of mobile devices using GPS, wire=
less internet, cellular network and sensor input to drive creation and playb=
ack=20
of rich-media content, cross-platform user experiences, and other mobile an=
d location-based interactive installations.
Responsibilities
* Accountable for the technical aspects of mobile and locative media re=
search and development and coproduction activity of the BNMI=92s ART Mobile =
Lab.
* Work as the primary engineer on a mixed-discipline team, and facilita=
te the specification of the technical development process. Accountable for t=
he Open Source development of the Mobile Experience Engine (MEE)
* Manage ongoing unit-testing, bug-tracking, feature-tracking and build=
system
* Prepare new applications for large-scale beta tests including install=
ation, documentation and training of users
* Code library fa=E7ade elements in Java, C++
* Develop and test platform-neutral facades into platform-specific APIs=
and code libraries
* Translate application designs into XML
* Develop XML schema and XSL stylesheets for converting designer-friend=
ly specifications in XML into XML meeting the Mobile Experience Engine (MEE)=
schema
* Develop XSL stylesheets for generating SVG-based visualisations of ap=
plications for review
* Responsible for managing a Linux (Gentoo) web server, Samba file shar=
ing and performing regular system backups. Work outdoors setting up and test=
ing mobile and location-based applications and installations in all mountain=
conditions =96 rain, shine, or snow.
* Provide consulting services and advice to visiting artists, designers=
and project collaborators with variable levels of technical knowledge.
Qualifications
* Bachelor of Science or better in Computer Science or Engineering is r=
equired
* 5+ years of experience working with Java programming, Web programming=
including PHP
* Must have good knowledge of Java, JavaME, C, C++, Linux server admini=
stration and management skills, platform knowledge with Netbeans and Websphe=
re, Python, C#, JavaScript, PHP. Knowledge of Symbian and competence with X=
ML, XSL and XML Schema would be an asset Previous experience developing mobi=
le applications involving Bluetooth and Wireless connectivity. Knowledge of =
JavaME (CLDC and MIDP2) is essential. High level of competence with embedded=
programming or small device programming.
* Basic understanding of electronics (experience developing electronic =
gadgets would be an asset).Requires very strong collaboration skills, specif=
ically the ability to work and collaborate in a highly interdisciplinary env=
ironment with non-technical colleagues including artists, designers, researc=
hers and academics.
* Experience developing for iPhone, OpenMoko, Android and/or open sourc=
e environments would be an asset.
Special Requirements
* Candidates offered a position with the Centre, in this capacity, will=
be required to obtain a criminal record check through the local R.C.M.P. de=
tachment, verifying a clear record before a final job offer can be made.
This is a CUPE local 4318 salaried support staff position, with a 6 month p=
robationary period.
This position pays between $4,012.67/month and $4,583.33/month, depending o=
n experience, working up to 40 hours per week.
