>> FACULTY OF FINE ARTS, CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY

>> Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Sustainability
>>
>> Concordia University’s Department of Design and Computation Arts invites applications for one tenure-track position in Sustainability for July 1, 2011.
>>
>>
>> The Department of Design and Computation Arts offers programs that examine the broad vision or culture of design within contemporary society. The Design Major is located primarily within the domains of image, object-making, and digital media with an emphasis on applications of material, visual, and spatial cultural studies. The program recognizes and promotes design as a persuasive form of intervention within the physical and discursive landscape. Students develop a background in the three streams and specialize according to their interests and abilities. In both the theoretical and practical considerations of the program, the curriculum integrates creative experimentation in individual and collaborative projects within the framework of socio-cultural, ecological, and economic sustainability. Students produce one-off and multiple productions in the areas of print works, web sites, typography, furniture, 3D rapid prototyping, display, web sites and design installations.
>>
>>
>> The successful candidate will be expected to teach Design courses at the graduate and/or undergraduate levels. In addition to teaching, the candidate will be expected to develop a program of collaborative and cross-disciplinary design research, leveraging opportunities to coordinate with other Faculties that are also developing sustainable streams and elective courses at Concordia University (e.g. Minor in Ecological Printmaking Studio, Faculty of Fine Arts and Minor in Sustainability Studies, Faculty of Arts and Science). The candidate will also be expected to participate in the administration of the department, including curriculum development, student advising, organization of special events, and committee participation.
>>
>>
>> The ideal candidate will have a sustainable design research profile, which enables, facilitates and supports the department’s strategic plan focused on sustainability in design pedagogy and transfer of knowledge at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We are particularly interested in applicants whose profile is multidisciplinary and whose research focuses on innovative strategies to explore design within the context of ecological and economic effectiveness as well as socio-cultural responsibility. The ideal candidate must demonstrate the ideological and technical skill sets to negotiate both the compromise and promise for the future of design practices within the built and natural environment.
>>
>>
>> The preferred candidate will be specifically required to address their potential role as a collaborator within the existing practices/teaching/research of full-time faculty members and to situate their individual research as complementary and innovative.
>>
>>
>> Applicants should possess a terminal degree, MFA, MDes, PhD, or equivalent; teaching experience at the university level; demonstrated ability to attract external funding for research; a strong emerging profile or an established design practice and research profile; and administrative and committee service experience at the university level. Although classes are taught in English, fluency in French would be considered an asset.

>> Submissions should consist of a letter of application; a curriculum vitae; a summary of research and/or practice focused on economic/ecological/socio-cultural sustainability publications, conferences, as well as collaborative initiatives. The dossier must also include a statement of teaching philosophy and interests; evidence of teaching effectiveness (including course syllabi and evaluations); and the names and contact information of three referees.
