Specific Technical Needs:
Motion sensor installed in the gallery ceiling or ceiling structure records the sound of the gallery space inside and plays back the recorded sound when a person is detected by the motion censor. It is kind of reinvention of delay effector attached to motion detectors.
General Project Description:
Recording From My Heart, 2011/2012
Live performance, media installation, two percussionists, two drum sets, two headphones, a music player, and movement censors with digital delay system Dimensions variable
Recording From My Heart presents two percussionists sitting in separate spaces unable to see each other and hear each other clearly. They attempt to communicate musically while listening to an audible notation of the same score called “Recording From My Heart”. The presence of another drummer
complicates the given notation and provides a secondary score. The duo attempts to create a musical dialog (sometimes call-and-response, sometimes
duet) while overcoming the obstructions to the performance.
The audience becomes a part of this challenging setting as his or her position in the gallery space produces a delayed sound of drumming. The position of audience
in the gallery space activate to play the drummer’s sound back and affects the drummers’ dialogue. Eventually the performer and audience in the gallery space
form a musical statement together.
