[GIG] Research Fellows, Gov Lab Maker Academy

Position: The GovLab @ NYU is looking to hire a Research Resident Fellow for Summer 2013 and the 2013­-2014 Academic Year. Current students or recent graduates may apply.  This position is modeled after the ITP Research Fellow positions and can be combined with it.

The Governance Lab (The GovLab) aims to improve people’s lives by changing how we govern. We are seeking new ways to solve public problems using advances in technology and science.

The GovLab builds, studies and implements experimental, technology­ enabled solutions that advance a collaborative, networked approach to re­invent existing institutions and processes of governance to improve people’s lives. Our work is predicated on the following hypotheses:

  • Institutions that govern themselves more collaboratively solve problems faster and with greater success.
  • Greater engagement leads to more legitimate democratic governance and also to better solutions for citizens.

GovLab operates as a network of networks. Housed at New York University and funded by grants from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the GovLab encompasses two major initiatives: GovLab Research and GovLab Academy.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Work with the GovLab team to design and build prototypes as part of governance projects that drive our research and training activities;
  • Work with Research Team to identify, analyze, and map scientific and technological advances in 21st century systems of governance;
  • Help build a long-­term strategy for the curation, presentation, and dissemination, of materials;
  • Contribute to the content and design of GovLab’s web presence (including blog, digest, and social media accounts);
  • Assist with the filming and production of short video interviews;

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate student (or recent graduate) with background in technology, computer sciences,communications, design, political science, public policy, international affairs, law and/or economics;
  • Proven research, technical and analytical skills;
  • Strong writing and editing abilities.
  • Familiarity with new research tools and interest in new ways of presenting information (including visualization tools);
  • Proficient with social media and web platform technologies;
  • A believer in civic innovation with hacker sensibilities;
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a creative and diverse team;
  • Resourceful and motivated by the opportunities and challenges that come with constantly evolving fast­-paced environments;
  • Demonstrated commitment to and interest in the field.

Position specifics:

  • Pay is commensurate to academic experience. Position is for the summer (June 1­ – August 31st) with the option to renew for the Fall and Spring.
