Assistant Professor of Graphic Design

The Department of Art at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track nine-month faculty position in Graphic Design at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning Fall 2015.

We are seeking a colleague who is knowledgeable about contemporary art and design issues and interested in extending the practice of design beyond traditional boundaries. The BFA Graphic Design program is strongly rooted in design process, typography, visual systems and design thinking. Our goal is to produce designers with a strong, personal voice who can practice design in a variety of settings, navigate increasingly complex design problems, and contribute to positive social change.

Candidates are expected to teach three courses per semester, which will include all areas of graphic design, and may include, based upon the successful candidates skills and interests, studio art, foundations, drawing, digital media, general education, or other related areas.

We are interested in a colleague who is forward-thinking and willing to bridge design and studio art. Professional experience in the field and within interdisciplinary contexts is also desirable.

Responsibilities include an active program of scholarship and creative activities, student advisement, curriculum development, and possible online instruction and/or instruction at off-campus sites. University and professional service is expected.

Minimum qualifications for this position are:

» A terminal degree in graphic design, visual communication design, interactive design or equivalent

» Experience with design solutions for print, interactive and emerging media

» Proficiency with technologies relevant to graphic design and digital media (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud.)

» Two years or more college-level teaching experience is preferred
