INTERN: Urban Justice Center, Safety Net Project, Videographer Intern

Videographer Intern

The Safety Net Project (SNP) at the Urban Justice Center (UJC) UJC provides free legal services
to low and no-income households at legal clinics located at food pantries, soup kitchens, and
community health centers throughout New York City. We advise, assist, and represent
individuals to minimize evictions, ensure tenants obtain necessary repairs to their apartments,
and guarantee that those who are eligible for crucial public benefits receive them. We combine
legal services, new media campaigns, and community organizing to advance the movement for
economic justice, preserve and expand access to social service programs, and ensure government
accountability.

SNP is seeking a Videographer Intern to work as the documenter of our upcoming campaign:
Accessing Justice. SNP’s multi-media campaign seeks to target tenants who are eligible for free
legal services to inform them of New York City’s new Right to Counsel law, and the benefits of
having an attorney represent them. The campaign is organized in partnership with Northeastern
University, JustFix.nyc, and the Right to Counsel Coalition. The Videographer Intern will be
joining this multilateral team to produce meaningful, social justice-oriented digital content to
further the campaign’s advocacy goals.

Job Description
SNP is seeking a Videographer Intern with a high degree of creativity, who will be responsible
for digital storytelling and managing media production. The videographer will have tasks related
to both production and post-production including footage shooting, assisting with interviews,
transport, operation of equipment, staging, and preparation. The videographer will work
alongside SNP executives and the rest of the campaign committee to develop content that
accurately and concisely displays the work of the campaign. They may also work alongside the
video editor to finalize the finished multimedia presentation. This internship is unpaid, but will
provide an excellent opportunity to influence the conversation around poverty and the affordable
housing crisis that affects millions of Americans.

Requirements

Only candidates with demonstrable experience with professional video documentation will be
considered. Candidates who have their own gear and/or video editing experience will be highly
preferred.

Successful candidates must possess the ability and willingness to learn the basics of the issues
presented: NYC Universal Access to Counsel law, landlord/tenant practice in New York City,
and the affordable housing crisis. Candidates should possess an aptitude for engaging with a
variety of people from diverse backgrounds, and a strong desire to work with New Yorkers living in poverty. Applicants must also have knowledge and understanding of how media can be
a tool for social change, a commitment to the Safety Net Project’s goal of combating stigma
against homeless and low-income people, and a demonstrated commitment to social and racial
justice. Strong written, verbal, and organizational skills are essential. Spanish proficiency is a
plus.

The Safety Net Project is an equal opportunity employer. SNP encourages applications
from people with diverse backgrounds, including women, people of color, immigrants,
people with disabilities, LGBTQ people, people from low-income backgrounds, and people
with personal experience with the criminal justice system. We strongly encourage
applications from people with lived experiences in the communities we serve.
