INTERN: Interactive media archive / dataviz internship for a band

Hi ITP’ers,

Mike Rosenthal here, class of ’09. I work for the band OK Go and we are currently looking to create an interactive multimedia database of the band that will include content that is both official, fan contributed, and scraped/integrated from online sources. This could include photos, videos, news stories, wikipedia entries, audio, tumblr posts, text, photo sets, tweets, fb posts etc, all explorable in unique and interesting ways via a custom web interface.
Questions we’ve been asking that have led to this project: How do you use new and strange ideas in data visualization to create an immersive data exploration experience? How do you tell the evolving story of a band in a compelling way for both casual and hardcore fans? How is it constructed to handle scale and moderation and to encourage active participation? How do fans contribute to it? How can it feel like an organic experience that a fan controls, while still providing a reliable and intuitive interface for the end user? How can it also be an amazingly beautiful tool and toy for the web that anyone would want to play with just for the interaction experience? How can the look and feel of this archive reinforce the cutting-edge yet playful public perception of the band?
We are looking for someone with a combination of ITP-style creative vision, disciplined focus, and badass programming chops who could work with our creative and logistical team (an archivist/copywriter, web admin, project manager, and of course the band themselves) to help us focus these questions into a workflow and then to ultimately create the system itself. We can scale the team as needed to bring more manpower and skills to the mix, but are hoping to find someone from ITP who wants to really own this project and run with it. This internship will be fully stipended and credited and can continue into the winter/spring/summer as necessary.
Please, only reply if you really have the time for another large project in your life. ITP is an extremely busy time. I know it first hand. We are seeking someone who is looking to make this their focused, time consuming project, not someone who is already overloaded with other projects but thinks one more couldnt hurt…
thanks.
