New York Public Radio seeks a front-end developer with proven javascript skills, an interest in design and UI with a passion for public media, new technology, and crowd-sourced journalism.

Reporting to the Director of Digital Technology, theFront-End Javascript Developer will build web and mobile platforms to integrate journalism, culture and media contributed by local and national shows, reporters and a dedicated participatory community. S/he will work as part of an agile team to support WNYC, WQXR, The Greene Space, New Jersey Public Radio and such national shows as Radiolab, On the Media, The Takeaway and Studio 360.

Responsibilities:
  • Participate in UI and application design
  • Develop interfaces for the web and mobile apps based on graphic designs
  • Assist with ongoing development, analysis and strategy to improve web services at NYPR
  • Evaluate and leverage javascript libraries for integration into NYPR’s diverse needs in media, participation and data-visualization
  • Write and maintain technical documentation on applications, processes and workflow
  • Engage in local and open-source communities for mobile and javascript/HTML development
  • Maintain awareness of industry trends in technology, public broadcasting and media. This includes design, content, community, user interfaces and information architecture
  • Comply with all New York Public Radio policies and guidelines
  • This position requires use of a computer, telephone and other office and/or broadcast equipment; ability to communicate effectively through a variety of methods
  • Ability to work extended hours as needed, including some evenings and weekends, and to be on-call for emergencies required
  • Other responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
  • Three years professional experience in software development
  • Excellent object-oriented javascript programming skills
  • HTML5, XML, HTML, CSS, JSON fluency
  • Familiarity with Flash and setting up open source audio/video players
  • Proficiency with server-side templating languages
  • Familiarity with version control systems like bazaar, hg, or git
  • Knowledge of Web 2.0 technologies including AJAX, social networking, and mobile interfaces
  • Ability to perform cross-browser testing and debugging
  • Ability and eagerness to teach yourself new skills with minimal hand-holding
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines with acute attention to detail and to work on several projects concurrently
  • Excellent communication skills—both oral and written—with an impressive reputation for building and maintaining relationships with people at all levels of an organization, across a diverse range of cultural, generational, ethnic, racial, educational and social backgrounds
  • Requires the intellectual and emotional depth, maturity, self-confidence and interpersonal skills to work effectively and/or interact with the other underwriting staff, executives at NYPR, colleagues, and clients as needed.
