About Prospect New Orleans
Prospect New Orleans was conceived in the tradition of the great international exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale and the Bienal de São Paulo, to showcase new artistic practices from around the world in settings that are both historic and culturally exceptional, and contribute to the cultural economy of New Orleans and the Louisiana Gulf region. Prospect.1 New Orleans (November 2008 – January 2009) featured 81 artists who exhibited at 24 venues throughout New Orleans. Prospect.2 (October 2011 ¬– January 2012) featured 27 artists at 16 venues. Prospect.3 is scheduled for October 2014 – January 2015.
The first two Prospect exhibitions have drawn widespread critical praise for their unique mixing of “high art” with New Orleans’ rich vernacular traditions. In its first two iterations, Prospect inspired the creation of some of the most iconic works in recent art historical memory, including Mark Bradford’s “Mithra,” a monumental ark built in the Lower 9th Ward. Prospect’s commitment to presenting art through the city’s diverse historical neighborhoods invites visitors to stray from the well-worn tourist paths, offering a unique and often surprising experience of this remarkable city.
Prospect New Orleans is organized by U.S. Biennial, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with administrative offices in New York City. The organization is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, whose members provide oversight for the organization and serve as advocates for U.S. Biennial, Inc. within the broader community.
