INTERN: Lang School teachers

The Lang School is seeking Interns to assist in the development and implementation of Creative Arts, Materials Science, and Design/Engineering projects for grades K-8.
The Lang School is a progressive, independent K-8 school serving high potential and gifted students who learn differently or struggle to meet the expectations of traditional learning environments. The Lang School provides comprehensive supports for students with ADHD, dyslexia, Asperger’s syndrome, anxiety, sensory processing challenges, and motivation deficits, allowing students to develop their social, emotional, and life skills while deeply engaging their inherent talents and creative interests.
Lang School students will study fibers through felting, spinning, weaving, sewing, and textile design, as well as paper making, paper construction and package design. They will investigate polymers through creating a variety of bio-plastics, by mold-making and casting, and using up-cycled plastics to create decorative objects. Students will investigate light and its transmission, refraction, reflection and the molecular qualities of transparency. In Visual Arts classes, students will express themselves with line, shape, color, and composition in a variety of media, and make cultural connections through masks, shadow puppets, marionette and hand puppets, hand-made musical instruments, flip books, and stop-motion animation. Engineering classes will use power and hand tools on pvc pipe, wood and metal to build simple and complex machines, create power generators and amplifiers, and control them through circuitry and hydraulics.
Interns will assist with project facilitation for 5 to 10 students per class. There will be 4-5 classes between the hours of 8:30am-3:00pm, with opportunities to work on special projects in smaller groups at other times. Additional project development and assessment time will be scheduled weekly.
This internship offers a unique opportunity to work in small groups with exceptional students on creative projects which bridge the fields of Art and Science, and offers access to the insight and experience of an outstanding team of experienced educators, psychologists, and therapists. Intern candidates must demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills, creativity, and enthusiasm for working with challenging students. The commitment of at least one full day per week is necessary to meet the needs of our program.

The Internship can be tailored to meet the needs of the student interns and your program.

This would be an unpaid internship, but we can offer a small transportation stipend. is there a process by which students could receive credit?
During the last week of August The Lang School will be holding a series of staff development workshops which a dedicated intern would benefit from attending. These would cover subjects like Collaborative Problem Solving, the Daily Report Cards, and other essential Lang School practices. School opens on September 9, and Interns would devote a full day per week for a semester (or for the entire school year!) Each subject is taught on a single day (with minor exception.) Engineering classes will be taught on Tuesdays, Creative Arts classes take place on Wednesdays, and Materials Science on Fridays.
Interns wishing to combine interests are most welcome, as they could support the integration of these subjects.
Qualifications are basic, but interns would need to be self-motivated, to have a strong interest in hands-on teaching, and a tolerance for the sensitivities and needs of this “twice-exceptional” population.
We look forward to the potential of placing ITP interns at The Lang School!
Thank you, and all the best,
Kate Yourke
