Courtney Harmel is a video artist and documentary filmmaker who produces videos for the arts, non-profit organizations and educational institutions.  In the 1980’s she was the in-house videographer for many clubs and other venues in NYC including the Limelight and Fiorucci. She recorded iconic figures of the downtown NY art scene including Andy Warhol, Madonna, Keith Haring, John Sex, Joey Arias, Grace Jones, Anne Magnuson among others, both on and off-stage. Her video art installations have been shown in Barney’s windows as well as at many NYC clubs and galleries.  Her video “Downtown NY 1984” was exhibited in the “DownTown Show: the Downtown Art Scene 1974-1984” at the Grey Art Gallery, the Andy Warhol Museum and the Austin Museum of Art.  Her archival footage from New York in the 1980’s was used for B-roll in the documentary “Arias With a Twist,” which premiered at the Berlin and the Tribecca Film Festivals in 2010. Harmel was a web video producer for web 1, pseudo.com and Russell Simmon’s site 360hiphop.com. She also trained journalists at 360hiphop.com in digital video production for the web.  Currently Harmel is a contractor for NYU’s TV and Media Center.

Video/Web Internship Available

Harmel is looking for an intern who is enthusiastic, energetic and can take initiative.

Tasks include digitizing and cataloging archival videos of the downtown New York art, performance, fashion and music scene in the 1980’s-1990’s and scanning and cataloging archival documents related to the events in the videos. Candidate should have experience in video production, including on-location production and video editing and familiarity with Final Cut Pro 7 and Adobe Production Suite. Ideally the candidate will have experience working with cameras, audio and lighting and may possibly assist on shoots.  HTML/CSS skills are a plus for developing a web site of archival and current materials.

Benefits of the internship are mentoring by a seasoned professional with over 30 years of experience. Shared knowledge and expertise for video production, newmedia/multimedia, documentary and experimental films, video art installations and preparing video content for cable TV and the Internet.

•       Internship is for 2 days a week for 8-10 hours per week. This is a non-paid position but a daily stipend will be supplied to cover incidental costs such as travel and food.
