AR Tests

I like the idea of using AR in books. I thought it would be neat to be able to open my notebook and see a character talk to me. The end sheets of my notebook have a pattern of blue icons on white and I thought that it would be perfect to use as a maker for Junaio’s GLUE technology. Unfortunately, it didn’t work well at all. I managed to get the character to appear for a brief instant, but then it would disappear rather quickly. I tried taking a picture of the end sheet, scanning it, getting tighter closeups, cropping, but nothing really worked well. I tried the cover of my Interpretive Exhibition Design textbook, and that worked a lot better:

This book worked better probably because has a much more distinct pattern from afar. But I was determined to get a character to appear inside my notebook. I reviewed Junaio’s guidelines for GLUE markers and decided that the pattern on my notebook was too detailed for it to work. I downloaded one of their markers and pasted it into my book and it works very well:

Of course, this isn’t the ideal solution, especially from a design perspective. I think right now, we’re on the verge of something really great with AR, and we’re well poised to take advantage of this technology, but we’ll have to wait until the technology improves until we can get it to do what we want.
